City-Centre Roofs and What They Need

The defining roof of the city centre is natural slate on a steep period pitch, and its weak points are well known to us. The valley gutters where two slopes meet, the lead flashing around the shared chimney stacks, and the parapet gutters hidden behind the front walls of Georgian and Victorian houses are where these roofs almost always leak first. Original slate can last a century, but the iron nails holding it corrode long before that, so slipping slates on an otherwise sound roof are a common city-centre call, often needing slate and tile work rather than a full replacement.
